Occupation: Farmer as his father before him. [7][8][9]
From at least 1840 until at least 1880 Stephen, Jr. lives in the same home in North Berwick, Maine with his parents' until their death. The neighborhood appears to expand as families divide property, but it is likely this was a homestead with same home on the same land. [10][11]
In 1940, his brother Isaiah Ford is enumerate in and adjacent home. On the other side of his father is Stephen Roberts, the brother of his his future wife, Lois (Roberts) Ford. [12][13]
The 1850 Census shows his father owning property. His sister Sarah, his nephew Lorenzo Ford and a 48-year-old, Fannie Goodwin, of unknown relation are living in the home. His brother Joshua is living in the neighborhood with his family; also: his Great Uncle Ira Ford and family; his brother Isaiah with the rest of his family; Stephen Roberts and his family and he (and Lois') mother Betsey (Quint) Roberts; his brother Peter, his wife Betsey (Roberts) Ford and family. Betsey may be Lois' sister. [7][14][13]
Death of Brother: 9 Mar 1851 Stephen Jr's brother Isaiah "was drowned . . . when the horse, upon which he was crossing some lake, broke through the ice." [15][16]
Marriage to Sister-in-law: 5 Nov 1853 Stephen marries Mrs Lois (Roberts) Ford the widow of his brother Isaiah. They are both residing in North Berwick. The marriage takes place in South Berwick, Maine and was performed by Rev. B. R. Allen. 5 Nov 1853 marriage intentions are filed for Stephen Ford and Mrs. Lois Roberts Ford in North Berwick. [17][18]
Stepchildren: The following stepchildren have been found. These are Stephen, Jr's nephews and a possible niece. The children of his wife Lois (Roberts) Ford and his brother Isaiah Ford :
Loisa has been mentioned, but without birth or death dates. [15]
By 1860, Stephen father appears to have transferred the real estate to Stephen. Along with his parents, wife and son, also living in their home is: Susan Grant, age 68, possibly his mother's sister; Fanny Goodwin; Ida Ford, age 5; nephew/stepsons Lorenzo and Caleb F Ford working as a shoemaker and stone cutter; Stephen's first cousin once removed Ira Ford Jr who is farming at the age 16. The following family remain in the neighborhood. [8][15][5][11][20]
-First cousin once removed and orphan, "Jane" Jennie Ford age 9, living adjacent to his Great Uncle and Aunt (sister and brother) Ira and Lydia Ford.
-Daniel and Ann Quint and family (Lois' son James' in-laws).
By 1870 both Stephen's parents have passed away. However, his home continues to be multi-generational. Stepson James' wife Mary passed away in 1864; he has married for a second time to Amanda Sargent in 1867. James and Amanda lived in Massachusetts for a period of time where they had several children. They located back to North Berwick, but are not quite in the same neighborhood. James' children from his first marriage, Stephan and Lois' grandchildren, Sylvester, age 16, and Ida, age 9, are in their home along with their son Albion and Stephen's cousin Ira Grant Jr. Stephen values his real estate and 2.5 times more than anyone else on the census page. Almost all the closets neighbors are family: [21][15]
-Stephen's cousin Joshua Ford has married Orinda and they are living adjacent where Joshua is also farming.
-Beside them is Stephen's second cousin Melinda (Quint) Plummer.
-Then Daniel Quint and his extend family. These are Stephen's sister Sarah and his brother James' in-laws, but neither Sarah nor her husband James Quint are living there. They have taken up residence further away in North Berwick.
-On the other side of the Quint's is Lois' brother Stephen Roberts, his wife Hannah and their children. Included in the Roberts' household is Lois's granddaughter Cora Ford.
-Adjacent to them is Cora's father Lorenzo and the rest of his family
-followed by Caleb F Ford and his family; these are Stephen's stepsons and their wives along with Lois' grandchildren.
-On the other side of Stephen's home is his Great Uncle Ira Ford, Sr. and Aunt Lydia Ford.
1880 United States Federal Census: North Berwick, York, Maine, United States * = Head of Household[9]
-Cora Roberts, Lois' granddaughter, enumerated as as Thomas Roberts' cousin (first cousin once removed, Lorenzo Ford 's daughter.)
-Joshua Roberts and his wife Julie (Allen) Roberts and their children. Another nephew of wife Lois and Stephen Roberts son.[22]
-Stephen's nephew (called Stephen Ford II) and his family. This is Stephen's brother Peter G. Ford son. Peter's wife Betsey (Roberts) Ford. It possible that Betsey is Lois' sister. In which case two brother's married two sisters. See "Research Notes: Family Connection." [11]
-Caleb Ford and family. This Caleb is another descendant of Stephen's and appears to be the grandson of Caleb Ford II.
-Stephen's niece and her family Francis Chadbourne and Louisa (Ford). Stephen's brother, Peter G. Ford's daughter. [23][24]
Death of Wife: Lois passed away 2 Jan 1882 and is buried with her second husband Stephen, Jr. (in a different small Ford Cemetery than her first husband.) [25]
Death and Burial: 8 Feb 1896 Stephen passed away in North Berwick, Maine at the age of 83 years, 3 months, and 19 days from apoplexy. He is buried in a small family Ford Cemetery 133 located on Ford Quint Road in North Berwick along with his wife and son. [1][26]
Research Notes
A birth record is required. Date and place of birth calculated from record of death. [1]
Relationships first appear on the 1880 US Census and can be tracked there as well as cited. The 1860 Census was taken out of order of the years before and after.
1860 Census, the relationship of Ida Ford is known. "The Valley of the Shadow" explicitly records that this is not Stephen's wife's granddaughter. Census 1870, 1800 and Find a Grave confirm James R Ford II's daughter Ida, was not born until 1861. [8][27]
Maine was part of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts until 1820, when it voted to secede from Massachusetts to become a separate state. North Berwick was not set apart from Berwick until 1831. It is common for vital records during this time period to be record in the State of Maine. Death records, particularly, may record North Berwick as a place of birth for a person who was born in that portion of Berwick that later became North Berwick. [28][29]
It is possible the brothers married two sisters? Stephen, Jr.'s brother Peter Ford married Betsey (Roberts) Ford. Betsy Roberts is the sister of Stephen, Jr's wife Lois (Roberts) (Ford) Ford per "Doughty Falls, The History of the Town of North Berwick." However, vital records are required to confirm this fact.
